Gold firm helps police in probe into shooting

Dar es Salaam. The management of AngloGold Ashanti fully supports ongoing police investigations into the shooting that resulted in death at the company’s Geita Gold Mine in Mwanza Region.

The incident occurred a week ago, and senior communication specialist of AngloGold Ashanti Continental Africa Region Cory Brandt said in a statement yesterday that the company fully supported the investigations into this unfortunate incident.

“An internal investigation is underway to identify and address root causes of the incident, and to ensure that measures are taken to mitigate against similar incidents occurring in future,” said the statement.

According to it, initial reports suggested that four people unlawfully entered the Lone Cone area and a struggle ensued with an armed GGM guard.

One, Mr Charles Nyacolema Nyamhanga, was wounded in the struggle when the guard’s firearm was discharged.
He received medical treatment and was transported to the Geita District Hospital in an ambulance.  However, he succumbed to his wounds after arrival.

The statement said AngloGold Ashanti was committed to acting in accordance with internationally recognised human rights protocols and was a signatory to the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights.
