VPSHR Workshop for Companies in the Mining and Energy Sector

Vice Presidency of Public Affairs and Communications conducted the workshop on Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (PV) to learn more about the implementation of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. More than 30 representatives of companies in the mining and energy sector, the government of Colombia, security forces and Cerrejón´s private security and surveillance companies, SEPECOL and Vigilancia Guajira, took part in the event. The objective of the workshop was to share practices and experiences, collectively identify obstacles, challenges, opportunities and challenges in the implementation of PV, and analyse work areas into the future.

The Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (PV) are a set of recommendations that seek to ensure that the work of protecting staff and companies’ assets takes place without affecting Human Rights of communities neighbouring operations, and preventing companies of being complicit in Human Rights violations.

The meeting addressed the 3 components of the PV: risk assessment, relations with the security forces and private security relations. Attendees were officials: Ecopetrol, Occidental of Colombia, Pacific Rubiales, Prodeco, Cerromatoso, EPM, Talisman Oil & Gas, Equion Energy Limited, CCX, Grand Colombia Gold, the President’s Bureau for Citizen Safety, the National Protection Unit, the Large-Scale Mining Association and Cerrejón.
