Police probe killing at Geita gold mine

Geita Gold Mine Anglo Gold Ashanti management has promised full cooperation to the police force in Geita district in the investigation of a shooting incident that occurred at the mine’s area last Thursday.

Gary Davies, Managing Director of the mine said in a press statement yesterday that circumstances surrounding the shooting and death of 18-year old Hoja Juma remain unclear at this stage.

“The incident is currently under investigation by the Geita police, a process that has received the full support of AngloGold Ashanti,” he said.

He explained that AngloGold Ashanti is committed to acting in accordance with internationally recognized human rights protocols and that is a signatory to the voluntary principles on security and human rights.

He noted that an internal investigation is also underway to identify and address root causes of the incident, and to ensure that measures are taken to avoid similar incidents to occur in the future.

Davies said this is not the first time for the mine’s management to work with government authorities, adding the company has on several occasions, worked with police and district officials in ensuring safe and responsible mining activities.
