SOCO – Human Rights Commitment

SOCOs commitment to the fundamental principles of Human Rights is embedded in our HSES polices and throughout our business processes. We promote the core principles of human rights pronounced in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

We shall honour the internationally accepted labour standards of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and be guided by the ILO Tripartite declaration of principles concerning multinational enterprises & social policy (MNE Declaration).  We shall support and respect the protection of human rights within our sphere of influence. This sphere extends across our internal and external business environment encompassing our own workers and reaching out to our supply chain, affected communities and other stakeholders.

We maintain the security of our operations within a framework that ensures respect for human rights. We adopt the voluntary principles on security and human rights implemented through our Security Policy and supporting procedures.

We strive to provide an environment where the fundamental rights of our workers are paramount and where we provide a safe and healthy place of work. Our employment relationship is based on the principle of equal opportunity and fair treatment in accordance with the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. Our workers are provided with documented information that is clear and understandable regarding their rights under national labour and employment law. We implement measures to prevent and address harassment, intimidation and exploitation.

While we recognize that we operate in areas that present challenges to our supply chain to conform with international standards, we require our business partners to demonstrate a clear commitment of intent.

We respect the indigenous rights and cultures of the communities within our host countries as defined within the ILO Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention C169. We recognize the importance of engaging with our communities and set up social engagement programmes in all areas of operation. We have developed processes of engagement and procedures for addressing concerns and grievances. We attempt to integrate our business activities with local communities as a good corporate citizen.
